In Aizu
Private and unique off the beaten track experiences in Aizu, Japan
Where is Aizu?
Aizu, located about 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Tokyo, is notable for how much of it has been preserved. A great part of this is thanks to the efforts of the local people, who have inherited the legacy, and the pride, of the samurai that came before them.
Known as the Buddhist capital of the north, the region is a wonderful combination of elegant scenery including vast fertile plains, deeply forested mountains, temples, shrines and Bandai san, a dramatic volcano.
Dotted throughout are hamlets, still strongly evocative of an older and more tranquil rural way of life. At Aizu’s core lies Aizu-Wakamatsu, a laidback city that belies the pride still held here by the locals for its samurai warrior arts and traditions.
Over the past 2 years Japan’s popularity has led to inbound tourism hitting record numbers. It’s overtourism has caused huge crowds in hot spots leading to infrastructure strain, congestion and cultural clashes. Locals have struggled with noise, overcrowding and disrespect.
Aizu is a location rarely visited by outsiders but popular amongst Japanese visitors for its beauty, history and cuisine. Aizu gives us the opportunity to support local, rural tourism, which is encouraged and welcomed by warm, friendly locals. Interpreting, cultural insights and local knowledge is shared, enabling cultural interaction with confidence and no risk of offending our local hosts.
